I keep updating the workshop based on family feedback. I’ve made some changes, so if you participated in the past, check out the updates for this year.
Here’s what to expect from this year’s program:
Step 1: Resumes
On June 1, I will release the resume portion of the program. It will involve a series of short videos as well as some worksheets and templates to help you get started. I’m offering this BEFORE we talk about essays because having a draft resume to start with often helps with essay brainstorming. I also think separating this portion into short videos segments rather than adding it on to an already long day will help you get more out of the material.
Expected time to complete: Most students will be able to complete the lessons and draft a college resume in 1 to 2 hours.
Step 2: Essay Workshop
I will teach the workshop live on June 14. We will begin with a quick Q&A over the resume material then I will teach the workshop. I plan to break the material into three segments, allowing us to take a 5-10 minute break each hour. I will pause for questions as we work through the material.
Expected time to complete: The live workshop is scheduled to take 3 hours. If you watch the replays and don’t take breaks, you will have about 2.5 hours of content.
Step 3: Start Writing
Get started as soon as possible. Some students can quickly identify a topic and begin drafting their essay; others take more time and may need more guidance. The sooner you start, the better.
Expected time to complete: Time will vary by student. Some students take a couple days while I’ve seen others take weeks. (If you are taking more than a week to develop your first draft, I strongly encourage you to join the office hours Zoom so I can help you.)
Step 4: Ask Questions, Get Feedback & Revise
As you will learn in the workshop, great essays aren’t finished in one sitting. Getting content, grammar, tone, and style admission ready will take some thought and revision. I can help.
I think one of the best parts of the program is the office hours option. During the summer I will have open office hours on Zoom for students to drop in and ask questions. I’m available to discuss topic ideas, review drafts, edit resumes, and more. If you want more personalized help (or if you are applying to some of the hard-to-get-in places with lots of supplemental essays, you can add on personal extra help.
Expected time to complete: Whether you join the office hours, add personalized help, or work on your own to get feedback and revise, plan at least a few days for this process.
